케네스 로스먼이 2002년에 쓴 'Epidemiology: An Introduction' 초판은 2003년 주재신 박사(질병관리본부)가 번역해 '역학원론'이라는 제목으로 나왔으나 지금은 절판돼 구하기 어렵다. 어렵게 중고로 구한 번역서 x-xi쪽에 '한국 독자에게 보내는 저자의 편지' 원문만 실려 있어 기록삼아 옮겨봤다.

한국 독자에게,

가끔 몽상이지만, 나는 광범위한 거리와 시간을 넘나들며 생각과 아이디어를 전달하는 문헌 소통의 힘에 경탄해왔다. (옮긴이 주: 케네스 로스먼은 사무실에서 잠이 들며 꿈속에서 가상의 인터뷰를 수행해 '역학' 2004년 15권 5호에 "존 스노와 인터뷰"라는 제목으로 발표한 적이 있다.) 그렇지만 심지어 오늘날에도, 문장의 메시지를 널리 확산시키려면, 언어 장벽을 반드시 넘어서야 한다. 어느 저자의 가장 숭고한 목적을 이루기에 번역의 노고는 필수다.

오늘날 세계의 빠른 속도가 번역의 필요를 아직 따라잡고 있지는 못하지만, 급만성 질환의 전세계적 확산은 악화돼왔다. 오래된 괴로움을 해결하기 위한 성공적인 예방과 치료가 늘어났고, 새로운 건강 위협은 우리의 건강과 사회의 자원을 위협하며 지속적으로 출현했다. 우리는 이런 도전에 맞설 준비를 반드시 해야 한다. 이 역학 원론은 역학의 기본 개념을 유행병에 직면해 대처하게 될 더 많은 청중에 전달하려는 나의 시도다.

책에서 나는 기술적 마법에 의존하기보다는 연구 설계와 데이터 분석으로 바로 나아가는 경로를 택하는 중요성과 역학적 문제를 다루는 기본 접근을 강조했다. 많은 역학 교과 과정에서 학생들은 율과 위험의 구분을 이해할 수 있기도 전에 다변수 모형화를 접하고 있다. 이는 연구 설계와 데이터 분석에 많은 문제점을 일으키는 전조가 되고 있고, 가치가 의심스러운 많은 겉치레뿐인 주제에 우선순위를 넘겨주고 있다. 나는 주재신 박사가 역학적 사고를 역학원론으로 한국 독자에게 전달해주게 되어 기쁘다.

Dear Reader,

In an occasional reverie, I have marveled at the power of written communication to transmit thoughts and ideas over vast distances and times. Nevertheless, even today, for the message of written words to diffuse broadly, it must penetrate language barriers. The work of translation is essential to the loftiest goals of any author.

Although the fast pace of today's world has not yet pre-empted the need for translation, it has exacerbated the worldwide spread of diseases both acute and chronic. As old scourges are met with increasingly successful preventions and therapies, new health threats continue to emerge to challenge our health and societal resources. We must prepare ourselves to meet these challenges. This introduction to epidemiology is my attempt to bring the basic concepts of epidemiology to a broad audience, among whom will be those who face the epidemics to come.

In the book I emphasize basic approaches to dealing with epidemiologic problems and the importance of taking a straightforward route to study design and data analysis rather than relying on technological wizardry. In many epidemiologic curricula, students are introduced to multivariable modeling even before they can understand the distinction between rates and risks, which presages many issues in study design and data analysis, are given priority over more flashy topics of dubious value. I am pleased that Dr. Chu has brought this introduction to epidemiologic thinking to a Korean readership.
